7 Top Questions to Ask at Your Next Job Interview

Interviews are not just about answering questions. They also allow you to ask your own, helping you work out if the job is right for you.

Remember, you are interviewing the recruiter as much as the recruiter is interviewing you.

Asking the right questions not only helps you in evaluating a job offer, it also presents you as a thoughtful, intelligent candidate worthy of the role.

It’s useful to have some well-thought-out questions up your sleeve so you can ask two or three at the end of the session.

Also, make sure you have some ‘spares’, in case your favourite ones are answered during the course of the interview!

  1. What new skills would I learn in this job?

Recruiters like to hear this question because it shows the candidate places importance on seeking knowledge and continuing to learn and grow.

Candidates who admit they don’t know everything are far more flexible and open to new experiences than those who insist they already know it all.

  1. Does the role provide ongoing training and support?

As well as presenting yourself as a candidate keen to learn, this question will tell you if the company offers the support and career development necessary for you to thrive and progress.

  1. How do you see this position evolving?

Show the recruiter you are serious about mapping out a career.

And determine whether the company is serious about long-term solutions and staff development – or simply a place hiring casual/seasonal workers to do little more.

  1. Is there anything else I can do to show I’m right for the job?

This question shows you are keen to demonstrate your suitability and are confident enough to ask it!

You never know what might eventuate. It could prompt further questions to clarify a point, and it gives you more opportunity to show you are a perfect fit.

  1. Are there any reservations you have about me?

This question flushes out any hesitation the recruiter might have as well as showing you are willing to accept criticism and keen to receive feedback.

It also allows you to deal with concerns on the spot. If you can help overcome any fears they might have about your suitability.

  1. Can you tell me who I’ll be working with?

This question shows you are actively thinking about the company’s staff and workplace.

It helps both you and the employer to imagine yourself working there, also providing important information about the way the teams function.

  1. Could you describe a typical day for me?

This will help you build a picture of the way the company operates and show the recruiters you are genuinely thinking ahead.

Interviews can be stressful, however if you go prepared you will feel much more relaxed throughout the duration of the interview. Asking suitable questions, as suggested above demonstrates your level of interest and enthusiasm in the future growth of the organisation – and the role you could play in supporting that growth.
