Do you get these awesome perks in your job?

Two business people sitting on exercise ballsCountless studies show that when we’re looking for jobs, we’re not just zeroing in on salary anymore. And it doesn’t matter if you’re seeking jobs in allied heath, construction jobs, retail vacancies or openings for hospitality staff – you’ll also be looking at the perks on offer, too.

The good news is, companies are starting to twig that it’s not all about the money (nice as it is to get a decent salary offer). They’re starting to offer structured programs around perks and benefits – and some employee perks programs may even be linked to smartphone apps so employees can make the most of the staff discounts and deals on offer.

Here’s a snippet of what we’re starting to see on the perks landscape.

Employee benefits in Retail careers

Dealing with customers all day can be exhausting and if the pay isn’t off-the-charts awesome, employers know that decent benefits may help to keep staff motivated and engaged. That might include training or diversity programs, scheduling flexibility, the ability to swap shifts easily with co-workers, or have a choice of shifts that fit in with your life and family commitments.

Some of the larger retail companies might also offer tuition reimbursement, bonus discounts during holiday times, employee discounts at the store they work at or associated brands – or potentially healthcare benefits.

Major perks in Hospitality jobs

During the pandemic, we saw hospitality agencies and tourism companies ramp up their perks programs to try and entice staff back to work. Some companies, such as Emirates One&Only Wolgan Valley, a 5-star Blue Mountains retreat, was offering to fly staff into Sydney if it meant they would take up a job at the establishment!

But Covid aside, other perks from working in hospitality and tourism jobs might include free or discounted meals (sometimes extended to family and friends). If you work for a hotel chain, you might receive reduced travel prices and room rates, and the ability to transfer to other locations. You could also receive healthcare discounts, insurance, student loan repayment programs and paid training.

Healthcare jobs and employee benefits

Nurses and medical staff in general have been doing it very tough in the past couple of years – so we reckon they deserve all the perks and benefits they get!

So what can you expect (or should you be asking for) if you work in healthcare or are looking into a health or medical career? Well, at Medibank, employees get subsidised insurance, entertainment discounts, health and wellbeing programs and different kinds of leave (including family violence support).

Working at Health and Aged Care (a government agency), employees receive a 15.4 percent employer contribution to super, counselling services, job-sharing options, mentoring programs, study assistance and a professional development program.

Perks and Construction careers

Working in construction jobs can take its toll – and if you work in a trade, the benefits that are attractive to you or those working towards a building career may be quite specific.

The construction industry famously operates 6 days per week and let’s face it: that’s not great for any kind of work/life balance or family time. So some of the changes employers are considering include more flexible employee agreements (which may offers a 5 day week work site so you get two days off).

Good employers may also offer you the ability to purchase extra annual leave, or have it written into the agreement that you can’t be asked to work your RDO.

Conclusion

If you’re not being offered any perks at your role, move on! Job-seekers have a lot more leverage at the moment and you’re in a good position to negotiate a package that benefits you.

Plus, companies who see the value in a good employee benefits program will always find it easier to attract and retain talent, motivate the talent they have, increase employee loyalty and improve on-the-job performance.
