How to get the confidence to apply for a new job

Did you know 1 out of 4 people lack the confidence to apply for new roles!

This stat came out of our workforce trends research. So, we know confidence plays a huge role in the job search process and it can be a major roadblock when it comes to achieving career goals across Generations Z, Y and X.

Maybe you’re on the job hunt because you’ve taken a break from the workforce – perhaps to raise a family or care for a loved one. Or maybe you’ve been in the same role for some time, and are reluctant to break out of your comfort zone.

Whatever it may be, if you’re on the search for a new role but are one of those people that feel like your lacking the confidence. Here’s our best tips to get it back.

1. Make a list of your past achievements

If your work identity has taken a hit, it’s easy to doubt yourself and cling to an impression of yourself that might not be the whole story.

So challenge those negative thoughts. Grab a pen and paper (or open your notes app) and think back to what you’ve accomplished. Did you bring in a certain amount of business to the company in recent years? Have you worked on super successful project and have the feedback to prove it? Or maybe you’re recognised for being a team player?

Jot it all down. Sometimes seeing it in black and white can make you remember just how capable and valuable you are and help you tap back into that vision of yourself.

2. Think about your transferrable skills

If you’ve had a break from the working world, you may have learned some new skills that could be transferrable to another role. Or, you may have had the opportunity to upskill in your current role, making you more valuable in the market.

Identifying your whole skillset and what you have to offer can be a great way to start to rebuild your confidence and give you the motivation to start looking at job ads in a whole new light.

3. Reconnect with past colleagues

Your confidence may have taken a dive and be impacting how you see yourself in the workplace, but your colleagues may have a different view.

Grabbing a coffee or lunch with people you used to work with isn’t just good fun; it can be hugely valuable in helping you revisit the past and remind you of the person you used to be.

Plus, your past colleagues can also offer great intel on the market and might be in different or higher-up positions – with the authority to open a door or two for you as well.

4. Think about what you’d like to achieve and set goals

Our research found that being stuck on a low wage can rock your confidence and stop you setting financial goals for yourself.

It might also stop you setting professional career goals full-stop – but it’s really important to give yourself a structure and some realistic milestones to work towards.

Finding the right job can be a lengthy process and setting goals can keep you motivated. Make sure to write them down and keep tabs on your progress as you go (we have a Career Planner that might come in handy for this.)

5. Don’t be scared by ‘laundry list’ job ads

It’s a fact that in job ads these days, many employers like to shoehorn in a seemingly exhaustive list of requirements and criteria.

And if you tick half the boxes, that might be a sign to you that you’re not right for that role – but actually, you could be perfect.

If you have key skills and competencies and know you could upskill in the other requirements, apply anyway. There’s no harm in throwing your hat in the ring.

6. Speak to a recruitment specialist for tailored advice

Think of a recruiter as your secret weapon. Imagine, an expert in the field being just a call away!

Our recruiters apply for jobs, negotiate salaries and place people in their dream role on the daily. So they know a thing or two about the job search process, and are there (for free) to coach and support you the whole way.

If you’re straddling both sides of the fence – i.e. still in a full-time job while looking for a new one, chat to a recruitment specialist about what’s out there and how you can leverage your skills and experience.

Often, it’s these types of experts who can help boost your confidence and help you see which type of companies would be most interested in what you can offer.
