How to take charge of your professional development

Group of three colleagues collaboratingThe key to success lies not only in landing the perfect job but also in continuously enhancing your skills and knowledge. Professional development is a sure-fire way to boost your confidence at work and it has shown to have an increase in overall job satisfaction. Plus, it’s a great way to show your expertise and passion you have for your industry to current or potential employers.

But gone are the days when professional development was solely the responsibility of the company. It’s your career, so it’s up to you to take charge of your own growth! Here are our tips to help you do just that.

Firstly, define your goals:

“If you don’t know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else.” – Lawrence J. Peter

First things first, you must have your goals clearly outlined with actionable steps to help you get there. Because if you don’t know where you’re going, there are no directions to help you get there.

Take some time to reflect on your passions, strengths, and areas for improvement. Make sure to write them down so you keep yourself accountable. Remember, your goals should challenge you, but they should also be attainable.

Ask yourself questions like:

  • What do you aspire to achieve in your career?
  • Where do you see yourself in 3 or 5 years?
  • What steps can you take now that will help you get there?

Find a mentor:

“If you cannot see where you are going, ask someone who has been there before.” — J Loren Norris

A mentor can be a guiding light on your professional journey. Find someone that has “been there, done that” before you. Seek out experienced professionals who inspire you, are on similar journeys and are willing to share their wisdom.

If you have someone in mind, buy them lunch or a coffee. Then dive into their story. Find out how they got to where they are now and get to know them even more. Learn to process decisions and ask questions like they do. Never underestimate the value of having a mentor!

Seek out new challenges:

“All progress takes place outside the comfort zone.” – Michael John Bobak

Volunteer for projects you wouldn’t normally work on or take on tasks that you know will stretch your abilities. Stepping outside of your comfort zone will help you acquire valuable knowledge, learn new skills and build resilience.

During this time, don’t be afraid to ask a mentor for help or guidance if you get stuck. It can be daunting to try something new, but just remember that everyone once started in the same position. And be sure to ask your manager so they can point you in the right direction – they will not only help but will be thrilled that you are willing to learn! Be kind to yourself and put your hand up if you need it.

Continuous learning:

“No thief, however skilful, can rob one of knowledge, and that is why knowledge is the best and safest treasure to acquire.” ― L. Frank Baum

Learning should never stop, even after you’ve earned your degree or landed your dream job. Always stay curious. If you have time in your schedule, make sure to attend workshops, seminars, and conferences related to your field. Or you can even explore online courses or webinars.

But, if you don’t have time or want to start small, you can listen to a podcast on your journey to work. Read a chapter of a development book before bed every night or read the latest industry news on your phone while drinking your morning coffee.

Build a network:

“Networking is not about just connecting people. It’s about connecting people with people, people with ideas, and people with opportunities.” — Michele Jennae

Networking isn’t just for job seekers—it’s a vital aspect of professional development. Connect with like-minded professionals in your industry, both online and offline. LinkedIn is a great place to start connecting and sharing ideas.

Join industry-specific groups on social media platforms, attend networking events, and engage in meaningful conversations. Your network can provide mentorship, offer valuable insights, and even open doors to exciting opportunities.

Embrace feedback:

“We all need people who will give us feedback. That’s how we improve.” – Bill Gates

Constructive feedback is a gift, so don’t be afraid to seek it out from colleagues, supervisors, mentors and people in your network.

Actively seek opportunities for improvement and take feedback as an opportunity to grow and see things from a different perspective. Remember, even the most successful professionals are constantly learning and evolving.

Finally, reflect and adjust:

“When it is obvious that the goals cannot be reached, don’t adjust the goals, adjust the action steps.” – Confucius

By taking charge of your professional development, you are embarking on a journey of personal growth and career success. Remember, to regularly reflect on your progress and reassess your action steps to make sure you’re on the right track. Be adaptable and willing to course-correct along the way.

The power is in your hands to shape your own destiny and unlock your true potential. And don’t forget to celebrate your achievements along the way!
