The top 5 roadblocks holding back your career

Your career can be one of the most important aspects of your life. It can bring you a sense of fulfilment, satisfaction, and financial stability. However, there may be times when you feel stuck or lost, not knowing where to go next, and you’re not sure why. Our recent Workforce Trends research, uncovered the top 6 reasons people get stuck when it comes to progressing their career.

1. Confidence is lacking

Our survey found that 1 in 4 people lack the confidence to apply for new roles, with women generally having less confidence than men This can be due to a fear of rejection, feeling unqualified for a particular job, or simply not knowing where to start.

One of the easiest ways you can build your confidence is to work with a recruiter. They can provide you with the support and guidance you need to make that next career move.

They help spruce up your CV, coach you on interview techniques and even apply for roles on your behalf, so you don’t have to!

2. Little experience

Another common roadblock is lack of experience. This concern is particularly widespread amongst younger employees across Australia and New Zealand. With 34% of our Gen Z’s in our recent survey (those born between 1993 and 2005) stated this was their biggest obstacle. The health industry appears to be the sector most affected by this, with 38% of Gen Z employees in the health sector agreement.

Most employers often require a certain amount of experience in a particular field or role. And if you are just starting out in your career or looking to switch careers, you can see why this can be a daunting challenge. But there are ways to gain experience, such as volunteering, internships, or taking on relevant projects outside of work. The Australian and New Zealand Government websites have lots of great resources to help you find work experience opportunities. Additionally, you can seek out mentorship or guidance from someone who has been through the process and has experience in your desired field.

3. Staying in a job with minimal professional development opportunities

A lack of professional development opportunities can stop you moving forward in your career, which is particularly true for Generations Y (those born between 1981 and 1996) and X (those born between 1965 and 1980). But, it’s important to keep learning and employees often find their job more fulfilling when they are supported in their professional growth.

If your current employer can’t offer much professional development , you can take the lead by seeking out relevant training programs, workshops, or online courses. You can ask your employer to might fund these or offer alternative options. Additionally, taking on new challenges and responsibilities within your current role can help you gain valuable experience and grow professionally.

4. Personal challenges

Personal challenges can range from health issues, family responsibilities, or financial difficulties. It can be hard balancing personal challenges with work responsibilities. So, it’s important to set realistic expectations for yourself when dealing with personal challenges that may impact your work.

It’s okay to ask for help when you need it, communicating with your manager about any changes in your availability or work schedule can help them to better support you and accommodate you where possible. While prioritising and delegating your tasks will help ensure that your work does not suffer. Remember to also take care of yourself by getting enough rest, eating well, and exercising regularly. By prioritising your physical and mental health, you can better manage personal challenges and achieve success in your career.

5. Lack of support from leadership

If you’re not receiving the support to move your career forward from your leadership team, it’s important to take proactive steps to address the issue. Start by scheduling a meeting with your manager or HR representative to discuss your concerns and goals. Be specific about the type of support you need, whether it’s more feedback, recognition, or growth opportunities.

If you’re not able to get the support you need within your current company, it may be time to consider other opportunities. Look for companies that prioritise employee development and growth, and be sure to ask about opportunities for feedback and advancement during the interview process.
